We Are Art! Podcast – "Showing Emotions for Beginners: How I Learned to Cry"

In this episode of the We Are Art! podcast, I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Sylvia Volz about my deeply personal project How To Cry. It turned into an intense and heartfelt conversation about grief, shame, healing, identity, and the strength found in vulnerability.

Since 2017, How To Cry has been my ongoing endeavor to document people who allow themselves to cry in front of my camera. What started as a spontaneous call for volunteers on Facebook evolved into a long-term photographic study exploring the expression of genuine emotions. My focus is not only on the act of crying itself but on the stories behind it—on what becomes visible when the masks fall away.

In the podcast, we discuss the origins of the project, the experiences I’ve gathered along the way, and why I believe that crying can be a form of resistance. We explore the power of vulnerability and how, often, the seemingly weakest moments can create the strongest connections.
